Background

After unsuccessfully trying to isolate Ney’s corps, Benningsen withdrew his army in the direction of Heilsburg in order to avoid being surrounded himself. Napoleon thought that the Russians were falling back on Heilsburg, but he had no conclusive proof until Marshal Murat ran into General Bagration’s Advance Guard corps acting as the Russian rear guard.
