Historic Results

Lt. General Lannes lead the advance guard of the Army of Italy into the Po River valley. Gen. Lannes' 8,000 men and Gen. Victor's 6,000 unexpectedly encountered Ott's 18,000 Austrians. Lannes had no choice but to attack the Austrians and await the arrival of Victor. Lannes' men suffered terrible losses (particularly from Austrian cannon) and fought bravely against hopeless odds. By two o'clock one of Victor's Divisions arrived and they began to attack quickly, driving the Austrians in confusion toward Alessandria... Lannes and Victor were then joined by Bonaparte, who was unaware that even larger Austrian forces under Melas were waiting at Alessandria planning to drive Bonaparte back at a village called Marengo... Years later, Lannes would take the name of Montebello as part of his ducal title.
