Jean-François Lamartinière (1770–1831) was a French Général de Brigade whose career, though less celebrated than that of the great marshals, reflected the steady service of many officers who sustained Napoleon’s wars. Born in Paris, he entered the army during the Revolution and rose through merit, serving in Italy and later in Spain, where he commanded brigades in the Peninsular campaigns. He fought at Salamanca in 1812 and in the Pyrenees in 1813, earning recognition for his stubborn defense though often overshadowed by more prominent commanders. Promoted to Général de Brigade in 1811, he continued to serve until the fall of the Empire, after which he accepted the Bourbon Restoration. Lamartinière lived quietly in retirement until his death in 1831, his name inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe among the long roll of generals who bore the weight of France’s wars.
