A count and a native Hanoverian, he was in the Hanoverian army 1783 – 1803, then transferred to the British army. He is the brother to Alten #2. With the KGL as a junior officer in Hanover, Copenhagen, Sweden & Walcheren from 1805-1809. X 11 Albuera; X (Mixed) 12 – W; XX (Lt. Div.) 12-14 Salamanca, W, Vittoria, W, Nivelle River, Orthez; XX 15 Waterloo (wounded). Back in the Hanoverian service after 1814, he was a Major General in 1816 & eventually a Hanoverian field marshal. (1764 – 1840)
