He was with Rochambeau during the American Revolution but saw little action in French service (although he fought at Valmy in 1792). A shadowy character, he later even tried to obtain British backing for his South American schemes in the 1790s. He left France in 1806 to join Simon Bolivar in the Venezuelan uprising and was captured in 1812, dying in prison in 1816. XX 92-93 Valmy, Neerwinden. Lt. Gen. in October 1792.
