Background

With Suvorov trying to outflank him to the south and a large enemy presence to his front, the Republican General Andre Massena was nearly surrounded. Sending 12,000 men of his command, under General Claude Lecourbe, to delay Suvorov's crossing of the Alps, Massena prepared to do exactly the opposite of what any self-respecting eighteenth century general would do. Just west of the Swiss city of Zurich on September 25th, 1799, Massena attacked Generalanchef Rimskii-Korsakov with his 30,000-man Army of the Danube.
