The Spanish Ulcer - 1809
Corunna
January 16, 1809
Background
Advancing to support their Spanish ally, Moore's British army became the objective for overwhelming French forces. After a chaotic retreat, the British reached the port of Corunna, and, with all their cavalry and most of their artillery already loaded onto ships, fought a last delaying action against the van of the pursuing French forces.

Scenario Rules
- Special Cavalry RulesOptionalThe area was heavily covered with scrub and bushes, plus a maze of stone walls, all of which greatly diminished cavalry effectiveness. To simulate this, apply the following rules: Treat all movement of cavalry and artillery units as if the terrain were rough terrain for distance moved only (not for changing formation, etc.). Roll a die whenever a cavalry unit is moved while in line formation for any portion of its movement (this includes changing into line formation at the very end of movement). If "1" through "3" is rolled, the cavalry unit is automatically disordered after completing its movement

Historic Results
The ground being unfavorable to the use of cavalry and artillery, the battle degenerated into an almost pure infantry brawl. Although the French were checked at all points, firing and skirmishing continued until dark. Moore was killed near the close of the fighting, and the British army was loading on ships and left Corunna during the night after the battle. Losses were around 900 each, although some sources claim up to 2,000 French losses.
