Background
After Lübeck was evacuated, Prince Frederik of Hesse had to pull this corps back as quickly as possible before allied columns could cut it off. The shorter route toward Rendsburg was rejected as too exposed to superior enemy cavalry, so the Danes chose the longer but safer line via Segeberg and Bornhöved; and Skjöldebrand’s cavalry pressed the Danish rear from Segeberg.
