Advancing on Berlin in support of Napoleon's march on Dresden, Marshal Nicolas-Charles Oudinot needed to secure his army’s flank by taking the vital town of Gross Beeren. General Bertrand's IV Corps supported by General Reynier’s VII Corps were detailed to accomplish this important task.
