Westphalia was an artificial state legitimized by the Treaty of Tilsit. It consisted primarily of the German states of Hesse-Kassel, Brunswick and Hanover. Never enthusiastic for either their ruler, Napoleon’s brother Jerome, or for France, Westphalia abandoned the Coalition of the Rhine in August 1813 and was divided up by the Coalition. Of the larger German states, Westphalian troops were the least competent and efficient.
