Created by Napoleon in 1805, the Kingdom of Italy was ruled by his stepson, Prince Eugene, as Viceroy. The Italians took part in all campaigns up through 1813, when most of the territory was overrun by the Austrians. In addition to providing a large excellent army of its own, Northern Italy was the prime recruiting area for over 20 regular “French” army regiments.
