Antoine-Guillaume Maurailhac Delmas de La Coste Delmas (1766–1813) was a French general whose career embodied both brilliance and controversy, marked by repeated clashes with authority and a reputation for insubordination. Rising quickly during the Revolutionary Wars, he fought with distinction on the Rhine and in Italy, but was several times arrested or dismissed for defying orders and mistreating his troops, earning Napoleon’s personal rebuke. Despite these blemishes, he returned to command in the Napoleonic Wars, serving at Bautzen and Katzbach before meeting his end at Leipzig in October 1813, where he was mortally wounded. Though his name is inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe, Delmas remains a figure remembered as much for his turbulent temperament and disgrace as for his courage in battle, a reminder of the volatile mix of talent and indiscipline that characterized many officers of the era.
