Commands

  • Commands the 2nd Württemberg Division of Württemberg Corps at La Souffel (1815)

Born in 1763 into the minor Württemberg service nobility, Döring advanced steadily through the ducal—and later royal—army during the long reshaping of the state under Friedrich I. By the time Württemberg entered Napoleon’s Confederation of the Rhine he was a seasoned field officer, valued more for reliability than brilliance, and employed chiefly in brigade-level and administrative roles. He served through the 1809 campaign and accompanied the kingdom’s contingents into Russia in 1812, surviving the devastation that shattered so many Württemberg formations. During the realignment of 1813 he helped reorganise the remnants for service with the Allies, finishing the wars as a lieutenant-general and one of the senior pillars of the small kingdom’s military establishment. He died in 1841, remembered as a competent, workmanlike officer whose career mirrored Württemberg’s own cautious navigation of the Napoleonic tempest.
