Pierre Chabert was born on 30 September 1770 in Joyeuse and died on 14 February 1839 in Besançon. He enlisted in 1792 in the de volontaires de la Haute‑Garonne and took part in the first campaigns in the Army of the Pyrénées‑Orientales during the War of the Pyrenees, where he was wounded and taken prisoner at Bellver. He was promoted to capitaine in December of that year. He then served in the Army of Italy, becoming an adjoint to Félix Baciocchi. He rose through successive ranks: commandant in 1804, major in 1807, and colonel in 1809. He became a général de brigade in the service of the Kingdom of Westphalia at an unspecified date, and thereafter a général de brigade in the French army, finally achieving the rank of général de division in 1815. He was awarded the Légion d’honneur as chevalier on 14 June 1804, as officier on 18 May 1820, and as commandeur on 30 December 1828, as well as being a chevalier of the Order of Saint‑Louis and commandeur of the Order of the Crown of Westphalia. After the Restoration of Louis XVIII he retained his grade and was conferred the title of baron by royal ordinance. He commanded armies in the Jura and Doubs departments. He was placed on retirement for seniority and lived until his death in Besançon in 1839.
