Vicente María de Acuña was a Spanish officer active during the Peninsular War, one of the many provincial commanders who rose to prominence in the desperate struggle against Napoleon’s invasion. Though not as celebrated as generals like Castaños or Blake, Acuña held regimental command and fought in the northern campaigns, where Spanish forces attempted to resist French advances in Galicia and Asturias. His name appears in contemporary rosters of officers engaged in the conflict, representing the cadre of mid-level leaders who, with limited resources and training, nonetheless played a vital role in sustaining Spain’s resistance. Acuña’s career exemplifies the improvised yet determined leadership that characterized the Spanish war effort, contributing to the long attritional struggle that Napoleon himself called the “Spanish Ulcer.”
