The Haitian leader. Born a slave but educated. Originally named "Toussainnt a Breda." He came to prominence after the 1791 slave revolt; allied with Spain in 1793, he switched to a French alliance in 1794and was made a French general; X rank in 1794; XX rank in 1795. Threw out the French officials and united the island by 1801 but was captured by Leclerc's expeditionary force in 1802. Died in prison in France. (1743 or 1746-1803)
