Wrote a tactical study of light infantry tactics. He was in disgrace for "monetary reasons" (many of the French generals were thorough and enthusiastic looters) and for extreme cruelty in the Peninsula War and retired 1810 – 1813. Returned to the emperor's favor, he was killed in action at Waterloo.
