He was "Count Brune" in Napoleon's nobility. A strong republican, he broke with Napoleon starting in 1808 and was effectively retired until he re-joined Napoleon in 1815. He defended Toulon until July and was murdered after the fighting was over by a royalist mob on August 2, 1815.
