A pre-revolution fruit seller who enlisted as a private in the French army in 1774, switching to the Prussian army in 1777. A soldier of fortune, he was back in harness in France in 1784, in the Neapolitan service in 1786 and back to France in 1790. He was the "Duke of Castiglione" in Napoleon's nobility.
