No biography is available for this general.
A son of "General Egalite." He was in the French army through the spring of 1793. "Philippe Egalite" was the name adopted by Louis-Philippe, the duc de Chartres, duc d'Orleans, and brother of the French king; a liberal politician and enthusiastic supporter of the revolution. With his two sons, he commanded a French corps in the Valmy and Jemappes campaigns. This service failed to convince the new powers in the land of his sincerity and usefulness and "General Egalite" was executed in November 1793 after his son, the then Duc de Chartres, fled with General Dumouriez in the spring of 1793. Chartres was known as the Duc de Valois until 1785, then as the Duc de Chartres and, after the execution of his father in 1793, he inherited the tile of Duc d'Orleans. He remained in exile until the Bourbon restoration, although he did not serve against France. He was later King of France from 1830 - 1848. This son of "General Egalite," the Duc de Castres, became a general in the Austrian army after he left France.
